When this sitcom first arrived I absolutely loved it. Back when the CW actually had television shows with mainly black actors, programs like "Girlfriends" and "The Game" were two of my favorite on tv. Although I still enjoy CW television shows, 90210, Gossip Girl, and The Vampire Diaries, the time period when "The Game" was on I felt was one CW's most entertaining.
Now that "The Game" has become a BET television show I have to say I'm not entirely pleased with the changes. When the game was on CW, Melanie Barnett's character was so much more likable. Her on and off love battle with Derwin, her search for a place to belong in the football world, her attempt to hold on to her commitment to becoming a doctor all made her someone who's next move you couldn't wait to see. She had my trust as a character.
In her new role as the official football trophy wife, she just seems so fake now. She's sunbeam president and trying to have a baby to add to the Derwin Davis legacy. One thing hasn't changed though, and that's the fact that she is still looking for a place to belong, related to the football world but more so in Derwin Davis Enterprises. This was made clear on a few occasions, one being when Derwin admitted to asking his manager to humor Melanie with the idea of her being the CEO of the business.
I could go on and on about the differences I'm in love with in the new seasons of "The Game" but when I think about the truth is the changes were necessary. In order for the television show to be a true representation of the Football world, the characters have to change. Realistically, as more money comes in Melanie's Coach bag would have to upgrade to and Hermes. Derwin's ego would have to grow,Jason would have to retire, and Malik would have to developo financial problems.
Despite this I have to say I felt CW's version was much more entertaining. There were more funny moments, football was more involved in the plot with actual scenes on the field rather than just talk and occasional locker room scenes.
In other news, I love Let's Stay Together. I think it's a great show. It's lighthearted with serious discussions and relative issues. The characters are entertaining and the show is as well. I'll keep watching these two shows to see how the plots develop. As far as "The Game" goes, hopefully Mrs. Melanie Barnett Davis comes back down to earth.
